Home Lighting Design Guide: What to Plan Before Your Renovation

Plan Your Home Lighting Before Renovation Starts

Good lighting should be planned together with your renovation, not treated as something to buy at the end.

For a new BTO, HDB resale flat or condominium, your floor plan, furniture layout, furnishings, ceiling design and ceiling fan positions can all affect where your lights should go.

A good home lighting design is not about installing as many lights as possible. It is about putting the right type of light in the right place for the way you use your home.

Common Lighting Planning Mistakes We See

From our experience helping Singapore homeowners, some problems come up repeatedly:

  • choosing lights only after electrical work is completed
  • placing downlights without considering furniture positions
  • installing too many lights simply to make a room brighter
  • forgetting to plan ceiling fan positions
  • choosing fittings based only on appearance without considering beam direction or glare
  • deciding on recessed lighting only after the false ceiling is completed

A little planning early can prevent unnecessary changes later.

Plan Your Lighting Before the Electrical Work Starts

Choosing Lights Too Late Can Create Unnecessary Problems

One issue we regularly see at Aspire is homeowners choosing their lights only after most of the renovation work has already been completed. By then, the electrician may already have positioned the light points, wiring and switches.

You may then find a pendant light, track system or feature light that you really like — but the existing light point is in the wrong place. Changing it later could mean additional electrical work or ceiling repairs.

That is why the important lighting decisions should be made before the electrical layout is finalised.

“Lighting is like jewellery for your home. It should be considered as part of the design, not as an afterthought.” — Lynn, Aspire Lightings

Start Your Home Lighting Design with the Floor Plan

Furniture Placement Comes First

Do not position lights based only on equal spacing across the ceiling.

Start with the furniture.

Where will the sofa, dining table, television, bed, wardrobe and kitchen worktop be?

A dining pendant should relate to the dining table, not simply the centre of the room. Bedside lighting should relate to the actual bed position. Kitchen task lighting should illuminate the work area instead of the floor behind you.

This is why bringing your floor plan to a lighting consultation is useful.

Think About What You Do in Each Space

Different areas need different lighting.

A living room may need comfortable general lighting for everyday use, softer lighting for television viewing and directional lighting for artwork.

A kitchen needs practical light over preparation areas.

Bedrooms benefit from comfortable general lighting plus bedside or reading lights.

Good lighting planning starts with the activity, then the light fitting.

False Ceiling or No False Ceiling?

With a False Ceiling

A false ceiling gives homeowners more options for recessed lighting.

These may include:

  • recessed downlights
  • recessed magnetic track lighting
  • concealed LED strips
  • ceiling cove lighting
  • recessed spotlights

If you are considering recessed magnetic tracks or cove lighting, decide early because the ceiling design needs to accommodate them.

Explore Aspire’s Magnetic Track Light Guide before deciding between recessed and surface-mounted systems.

Without a False Ceiling

You can still create a good lighting design without building a false ceiling.

Consider:

  • surface-mounted downlights
  • track lights
  • surface-mounted magnetic tracks
  • ceiling lights
  • pendant lights
  • ceiling fans with LED lights

The best option depends on your preferred look, ceiling conditions and how much flexibility you want.

Use Ambient, Task and Accent Lighting Together

Ambient Lighting for General Brightness

Ambient lighting provides the main illumination in a room.

Common choices include ceiling lights, downlights, diffused track lights and ceiling fans with integrated LED lights.

Task Lighting for Specific Activities

Task lighting gives extra light where you need it.

Examples include:

  • kitchen worktop lighting
  • bedside reading lights
  • dressing table lights
  • study table lighting

Accent Lighting for Atmosphere

Accent lighting adds depth and draws attention to selected features.

Examples include magnetic track spotlights, recessed spotlights, wall lights and concealed LED strip lighting.

You do not need all three types everywhere. Use them where they improve how the room functions or feels.

Plan Ceiling Fans and Lighting Together

Fan Position Can Affect Your Lighting Layout

If you are installing ceiling fans, include them in the lighting plan from the beginning.

The fan occupies a large area of the ceiling, so nearby downlights and spotlights should be positioned carefully.

In compact bedrooms, a ceiling fan with an integrated LED light can provide both airflow and general illumination from one fitting, reducing the number of ceiling fixtures needed.

Choose Colour Temperature Based on the Space

3000K Warm White

Warm white creates a softer and warmer appearance. It is commonly used in bedrooms, living areas, feature lighting and spaces where homeowners want a more relaxed atmosphere.

4000K Neutral White

4000K gives a cleaner, more neutral appearance and can suit kitchens, dressing areas and homeowners who prefer brighter-looking interiors.

There is no need to use the same colour temperature throughout the entire home.

Your finishes matter too. Flooring, wall colours, cabinets, curtains and furniture can all look different under different lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need a False Ceiling for Good Home Lighting Design?

No. A false ceiling gives you more recessed-lighting options, but surface-mounted downlights, track lights, magnetic tracks, ceiling lights and pendants can also create an effective lighting plan.

When Should I Choose My Lights During Renovation?

Plan the main lighting layout before the electrical points and switches are finalised. You do not necessarily need every decorative fitting immediately, but important fixture types, positions and sizes should be decided early.

Should Ceiling Fans Be Planned Before Downlights?

Yes. Confirming the fan position first makes it easier to plan surrounding lights and avoid awkward lighting positions around the fan.

What Should I Bring to Aspire for Lighting Planning?

Bring your floor plan and, if available, your furniture and ceiling plans. Photos or mood references are also useful for understanding your preferred style.
